Canon MP Navigator EX for Canon PIXMA MP970 Windows ⁄11 Setup
The Canon PIXMA MP970 is a classic, high-quality all-in-one photo printer. To unlock its full scanning capabilities on modern operating systems, you need the right software interface. Canon MP Navigator EX is the dedicated application designed to help you manage scanned photos and documents, convert images to PDF, and enhance your digital files.
While this printer and software were originally designed for earlier versions of Windows, you can still successfully set up and use Canon MP Navigator EX on Windows 10 and Windows 11. This guide covers everything you need to get up and running. Step 1: Install the Correct Printer and Scanner Drivers
Before installing the MP Navigator EX software, Windows must be able to communicate with your PIXMA MP970. Because of the printer’s age, dedicated Windows 11 or Windows 10 drivers are not actively updated by Canon, but older drivers work perfectly via compatibility mode. Disconnect your printer’s USB cable from your computer.
Visit the official Canon Support website and search for the PIXMA MP970. Go to the Drivers & Downloads section.
Select Windows 7 (64-bit) or Windows 8 (64-bit) from the operating system dropdown menu. (These drivers are fully compatible with Windows 10 and 11).
Download the MP Drivers package, which contains both the print and scan drivers.
Right-click the downloaded installer file and select Properties.

Locate MP Navigator EX (ensure it matches version 1.0 or later designated for the MP series) and download it.
Just like the driver, right-click the MP Navigator EX installer, go to Properties > Compatibility, and set it to run in compatibility mode for Windows 7.
Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator. Follow the on-screen setup wizard to complete the installation. Restart your computer to finalize the system integration. Step 3: Configure and Use the Software
With both components installed, you are ready to configure the program for seamless scanning.
Launch MP Navigator EX from your desktop shortcut or Start Menu.
If prompted to select your device, choose PIXMA MP970 or MP970 Series from the product drop-down list.
Click on the Preferences button in the top right corner to set your default saving folders, file naming conventions, and image resolution rules.

TWAIN Data Source Error: MP Navigator EX relies on the TWAIN architecture. If it cannot find the scanner, copy the driver files from C:\Windows\twain_32\MP970 into the main MP Navigator EX installation folder (usually found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Canon\MP Navigator EX).
Check Privacy Settings: Windows 10 and 11 have strict privacy tools. Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera/Microphone and ensure apps are granted permission to access your imaging hardware.
USB Ports: Ensure the printer is plugged directly into a USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port on your motherboard, avoiding unpowered external USB hubs.
